I had heard about a new cupcake shop opening on GRNOW.com and wanted to check it out. Little Pearl is a cute little shop located across from Family Fare on Northland Drive. This place is heavy on the Pink, but it works. It is almost like the pink and white stripes the wall is painted and all the little hanging cupcake pictures are a subliminal message to buy cupcakes.

I met Niki one of the owners and she was very friendly and happy to talk about her cupcakes. They had a handful of flavors and they all looked excellent. I ended up with a ‘Latte’, ‘Pina Colada’, and a ‘Chocolate Carmel Pretzel Peanut Butter’. Yeah that last one tastes as good as it sounds, but more on that in a minute.

Niki told me a little about her business and how she and her friend Emily started doing cakes and cupcakes just for family and friends. That then turned into an online venture and orders have been going well so it was time to start a store front, something both Niki and Emily had visioned all along.

Niki explained how all of their cupcakes are super fresh, never a mix, only the best ingredients, and never any oil. They keep a limited quantity out because of that reason. Cupcakes are harder to keep moist than a cake and Niki doesn’t ever want anyone to leave with a dry cupcake. You could tell that this was more than just a business to Niki, but a passion.

Now on to the Cupcakes

‘Latte’ is just as it sounds an espresso cupcake with a hazelnut butter cream. I got this one for my wife as I am not a fan of anything coffee flavored. I did try it just to be fair, it really wasn’t an overpowering coffee flavor very subtle on top of the chocolate, and it got a little stronger as the frosting melted in your mouth and you were left with just the cake. Really a nice balance of flavors. It was a little hard to taste the Hazelnut in the buttercream, but all the flavors worked together very well.

‘Chocolate Carmel Pretzel Peanut Butter’ is a Chocolate Cupcake with peanut butter buttercream filled with caramel, drizzled with caramel and topped with pretzel crumbs and chocolate drizzle. This is not your Grocery Store cupcake, this is a serious cupcake. The PB buttercream was perfect, not overpowering and very creamy. The chocolate cupcake was great, very moist and held up well. Little Pearl really could have stopped at just the PB buttercream and chocolate cupcake, but I am glad they didn’t. Adding the carmel and pretzels was a nice touch, added a little salty bite to go with all the sweet. Excellent idea, this cupcake alone is worth the trip.

‘Pina Colada’ is a pineapple cupcake filled with pineapple curd and topped with coconut buttercream and coconut shavings and a cherry on top. Now I am a huge fan of coconut and pineapple, and this cupcake did not disappoint. The coconut butter cream just explodes with a rich coconut flavor, they should serve that by the spoonful. The pineapple cupcake is super moist and just kind of melts together with the coconut flavors. It is excellent, the only thing missing from this cupcake is rum. This was my favorite for sure, I will be back for many of these. The ‘Chocolate Carmel Pretzel Peanut Butter’ is enough to get you there, but the ‘Pina Colada’ is what is going to keep you coming back.

Little Pearl is an excellent addition to the area, if you have a party, special event or you are just looking for a delicious snack, make your way to Little Pearl. Place an order or just grab a few cupcakes for dessert. Stop in and try them, support your local business, especially one as unique as this, you will not be disappointed.

Loved the latte cupcake and they have the cutest flower pot with cupcakes that is made to look like flowers growing from within the pot. Very cute idea for Valentine’s Day. Super cute decor…….

OMG!!! I am soooo happy to have discovered this place! First of all, I have to say that besides the cupcakes being sooo yummy, I really really love the size of them and the price. I have only been to two other cupcake stores, one in NYC and another one in Grand Rapids. Those two disappointed. The cupcakes were huge and so was the price! They were very expensive, could have bought a nice big cake at some bakeries for the price of their cupcakes and they were just way too big, very overwhelming. We are all trying to eat healthier but need a little sweet treat once in a while, right? These the perfect, not “mini” like a mini muffin or brownie, and not overwhelmingly huge with a thousand calories. They are perfect size and very reasonably priced at 2.50 for filled ones and 2.00 for non-filled ones. I had a Latte with the hazelnut buttercream frosting and a chocolate chocolate one. Both were excellent. I am a coffee addict and so the Latte one really hit the spot for me and my favorite part was the hazelnut buttercream frosting, so light, not too sweet and just the right amt of nice subtle hazelnut flavor. The chocolate chocolate cupcake was just that. A chocolate lover’s dream come true. I really love the kind of frosting they make here. It is very light and creamy and not too sweet, not too sugary, very flavorful though. I hate when a good cake is ruined by some grainy, sugary frosting. I LOVE their frosting! So to summarize, taste fantastic, not too big, not too small, and very affordable! I love you Little Pearl and will be telling all of my GR friends about you!
